"Employment of accountants and auditors is expected to grow by 18 percent
between 2006 and 2016," according to the
Bureau of Labor Statistics, and it's no wonder. Tax laws change each
year and investment firms have cropped up at a steady pace, creating
additional demand for accountants to conduct annual reviews, work in their
financial operations and back offices.
Students earning an undergraduate degree in the subject of accounting
typically go on to earn certification to work as a Certified Public
Accountant (CPA). Though regulations vary from state to state, most states
require individuals to hold at least a bachelor's degree before sitting for
the CPA exam. Most states have published the minimum number of college
credits that are required.
The CPA examination fee also varies from state to state. California, for
example, charges $100.00 to individuals who are taking the exam for the
first time. New Jersey, however, charges $315.00. It costs $866.91 to sit
for the CPA exam in New York.
Associate’s degree programs in accounting are designed to provide students
with the basic competencies and skills to start in this profession, but very
few states allow associate’s degree holders to sit for the CPA exam. For
bachelor’s
degree programs, students can work towards: a business administration
degree with a concentration in accounting; a bachelor of science in
accounting; a bachelor of business with a concentration in accounting; a
bachelor of arts in accounting. An
online
accounting degree is a viable option as well in this day and age.
Accounting is a profession that provides many opportunities for advancement.
Bachelor’s degree holders who are also CPA’s typically earn a starting
salary of $45,000 and up (with less than one year of experience). From
entry-level positions, professionals will gain additional work experience
and eventually go on to enroll in advance degree programs to strengthen
their skills in accounting.
A CPA is an important member of any business or organization. Accounting
skills are highly valued and candidates are always in demand.
Attaining the appropriate education can be time intensive, but many are
turning to
online education to begin
a new or enhance their current career. Earning college
degrees online is the viable option
for almost all mainstream careers, including business, education, nursing,
and healthcare.
