The Postal Service recently implemented their new
eCareer online recruiting
process. Entrance tests are still required for most jobs; however, you now apply
online for post office job vacancies and complete an initial assessment when you
apply. Applicants now take proctored exams at designated testing facilities on
computers instead of lengthy written tests that were previously used.
This site, along with ourPost Office Jobsstudy guide, features the many changes in the Postal Service's
recruiting programs.
The Postal Service is offering early retirements to
150,000 postal workers and according to Greg Fry, USPS Spokesperson, there is
currently a hiring freeze for career positionsexcept for electronics technicians and various
mechanics. Certain critical vacancies will also be filled. The
Postal Service is recruiting for non-career Casual,
Temporary Relief, Transitional and Rural Carrier positions on an as needed
basis. The starting pay is from $9 to $20 an hour and a recent
online search found many non-career openings nationwide. These
positions are a good way to get your foot in the door and they don't require
a written entrance exam.
If you are hired for a non-career appointment you will have a better chance
of landing a career position after the reorganization. Temporary
appointments typically run from 89 to 359 days with additional appointments
possible depending on the position type.

To provide information to federal government job
seekers concerning opportunities in civil service and to help them
explore ALL viable options.
Consider the numbers. The federal government employs over 2,704,000
workers and hires over a hundred thousand new employees each year to
replace workers that transfer to other federal or private jobs, retire,
or stop working for other reasons. Average annual salary of all
full-time employees exceeds $67,000. The U.S. Government is the largest
employer in the United States, hiring two percent of the nation’s
civilian work force. Post Office jobs account for approximately 773,000
of Uncle Sam’s total employment so many civil service opportunities
exist for those who know where to look.
